What led to the brief closure of Ostend station after the attack report?
Police then inspected the entire station to make sure it was safe. During the check, train services were stopped and passengers were kept away from the platforms. After confirming that there was no danger, authorities reopened the station and services returned to normal.
Investigators suspect that psychological problems may have played a role in the man’s behaviour. The West Flanders public prosecutor’s office has started an investigation. Police are collecting statements and reviewing the situation to understand what happened.
Belgium has had similar security incidents in the past, especially at key transportation centres. The coordinated bombings at Brussels Airport in Zaventem and the Maelbeek metro station took place on March 22, 2016, and resulted in the deaths of 35 individuals and 300 injuries. The most recent incident took place on 20 June 2017. In this case, a man attempted to detonate an explosive at Brussels Central Station and was stopped and killed by soldiers.
